Eligibility Guide

Find out which Massachusetts energy rebate programs you qualify for.

Standard Rebates

Available to all Massachusetts homeowners who are utility customers.

Requirements

  • Own or rent a home in Massachusetts
  • Be a customer of a participating utility
  • Meet equipment efficiency requirements
  • Use approved contractors (for some programs)

Example Programs

Heat pump rebates up to $10,000, insulation rebates, smart thermostat rebates

Income-Qualified Programs

Enhanced rebates for households meeting income guidelines - often 2-3x higher.

Requirements

  • Household income at or below 60% of state median income
  • Or participation in certain assistance programs (SNAP, LIHEAP, etc.)
  • Some programs extend to 80% of area median income

Example Programs

No-cost home energy assessments, free insulation, enhanced heat pump rebates

Renter Programs

Some rebates are available to renters, not just homeowners.

Requirements

  • Be a utility customer (your name on the bill)
  • Landlord permission for major upgrades
  • Live in a 1-4 unit residential building

Example Programs

Smart thermostats, LED lighting, energy assessments

Landlord & Multi-Family

Programs for rental property owners and multi-family buildings.

Requirements

  • Own residential rental property in Massachusetts
  • Building must be 1-4 units (some programs cover larger buildings)
  • Tenants must be utility customers

Example Programs

Building insulation, common area lighting, heat pump installations

Income-qualified programs use these thresholds. Guidelines are updated annually.
